Wayland Games Halloween Miniature Painting Competition 2023
As Halloween approached, the Wayland Games staff have heard the whispers in the dark as the rain clouds brought with them an eerie and displaced aura to the month of October. We listened closely and deciphered the whisperer’s request:
….Halloween…miniature…painting…competition….
….get…a…move…on….
And who are we to say no to such an, ah-hem, polite request from whispers by an ominous source?
Welcome to the RETURN of the WAYLAND GAMES HALLOWEEN MINIATURE PAINTING COMPETITION
Staff braced themselves for what, surely, could be the theme? Those who prefer the spine-chilling spooks and scares of the season wanted gore and the fun they could do with their pile of shame projects. Whereas the lovers of autumn wanted warmth, pumpkins, and the smell of cinnamon to motivate them to crack open their paint pots.
Decision? A double feature of Horror and Harvest, of course! All our staff taking part have to complete not one but TWO miniatures for their entry which can be Horror or/and Harvest themed to be judged at our Staff Association Halloween Potluck. ALSO I wanted decorated bases so I added it as a requirement (because I could).
Lastly, before we move on to the GOOD STUFF, we cannot have a painting blog without a shout-out to one of our brilliant office dogs.
Here is the snoot boop worthy Bucky on his second ever day at Wayland Games HQ in Essex. His favourite things are biscuits and booping YOU on the nose. He is a good dog alongside fellow office dogs Pippin, Bertie, Teddy, and Luna

Here you can take a look at some of our staff’s works in progress. Choosing to either use a purchased miniature or create their own using 3D printing or resin, no two miniatures are alike.

See a technique or colour scheme you like?
Head on over to our social channels to ask about any techniques or colour schemes, from this blog, that you’re interested in. Our fantastically frightening social team will scare the staff until they confess their painting secrets.
Alongside good old-fashioned PotLuck, Spider Splat, a Pumpkin Carve competition, Jar of Eyes, and a Halloween Headgear parade - all our staff got to cast their votes for the painting competition.
There were many a focused face as the judging commenced. For, of course, what makes something a WINNER? What one person thinks is first place worthy may not be the same as what another deems worthy.
Was it difficult? Oh yes. Was it fun? OH YES.
With the judging taking place at the Staff Association Halloween Potluck, we’re ready to announce the winners, runners-up, and placers.
A big well done to all the staff who entered, using their own time to create mini masterpieces, we love seeing their hard work.
If you enjoy our Staff Painting Competitions, keep an eye out for future blogs.
