Nanoblocks: Exploring Japan's Micro-sized Building Blocks
Nanoblocks, a relatively new concept to many, are steadily gaining popularity as they become increasingly available in stores throughout the UK.
At Wayland Games, we've been captivated by these miniature block puzzles and are excited to introduce them to our blog readers.
What Are Nanoblocks?
Nanoblocks are small-scale construction projects that allow for incredibly intricate model-making with unique tiny-sized blocks - the smallest of which is just 4mm-4mm! These sets are highly collectable and appeal to a wide set of ages and tastes.
These sets are often likened to LEGO® bricks, yet they differ significantly in their connection method, purpose, and size. As opposed to a traditional tube connection method, Nanoblocks have a double ridge backing system, which not only connects each piece but allows for offset blocks, creating more opportunities for diverse builds. They have just 11 brick types, which the company says allows it to remain true to its function as a construction product. Another useful feature that we’re sure everyone would appreciate is that Nanoblock sets nearly always come with spare bricks for when one or more pieces vanish behind the sofa!
Nanoblocks also fall in line with our own commitment to greener games. The bricks are coloured using soy ink rather than petroleum-based products, which is better for the environment while still providing amazingly vibrant colouring. Even the packaging has been considered as the company strives to use the smallest size able to contain the product. This has the added benefit of knowing your box is literally stuffed with tiny construction bricks!
Each Nanoblock build has a marked difficulty rating, which determines the intricacy of the build. Higher levels can include complicated design features and take more thought to complete, which creates the 3D puzzle element.
The History Of Nanoblocks
Kawada (a toy company based in Tokyo) first started to produce Nanoblocks in October 2008. The sets rapidly gained success and a huge following, first in Japan and then spilling over to the rest of the world, with imports reaching 31 countries in 2012. The manufacturer also creates licensed products, special editions, and trend response sets while constantly adding new items to the catalogue. Alongside this, competitions are regularly run for user-submitted creations under different categories.
In 2010, Nanoblock won an Outstanding Performance Award in the High Target category at the Japan Toy Awards for the deluxe edition set based on Neuschwanstein Castle. The following year, Nanoblock won the Grand Prize in the High Target category at the 2011 Japan Toy Awards for their model of the Tokyo Skytree. In 2012, Nanoblock opened their first official store and won the Brand License Award at the 2012 Licensing of the Year Awards.
