A Look Back at Spiel 2017
Who wouldn't jump at the opportunity to visit each of the halls and take a look at the boardgames, tabletop games and miniature games on offer around Spiel?
For the good of Wayland Games, of course...
Whether you attended yourself or not, I'm going to attempt to bring a little bit of Spiel to you; with comments, opinions and pictures of stands and games from the hard hitters, and others that I managed to visit!
First off; the Fantasy Flight Games stand. It was awesome. It was so great in fact, that getting close enough to see anything on the first day was impossible. The queue for demo games of the incoming Star Wars Legion (SWL) was huge!
Should have expected it really...
It wasn't until day 3 I was able to get an eyeful of their shiny new demo tables for SWL and the gameplay. Even then it was just a glimpse before the wave of fellow gamers came flooding through.
With so many great games currently on the horizon (so close, my pretty's) it would have been impossible not stop by and take advantage!
Showcases of some of their newer releases - such as Doom - were being demoed at the event alongside their future releases. If you haven't played Doom yet, I highly recommend it. I already have this at home and play it a lot, almost as much as the old Gears of War game from a few years back, but I have not seen as much love for the game as I initially expected.
Although, watching people have demos and seeing their reactions having experienced gameplay, I am expecting the game to start getting some great press.
Demos for the hotly anticipated Twilight Imperium were drumming up a lot of interest and positivity with smiles all around - all I can say is it's going to be a beast of a game!
Civilization: A New Dawn was clearly going down well too. However, the Queen of the FFG crown was definitely SWL. Again, unsurprisingly, we could have guessed that...
My personal favourite on show at Fantasy Flight's stand was the Fallout Board Game. I know, I'm a sucker for games related to computer games and I am sure it shows. I'm very much looking forward to getting my copy when it arrives on UK shores.
Following the computer games theme, the guys from Modiphius were at Spiel showing off lines from the upcoming Fallout miniatures game (whoop) and the Star Trek Adventures RPG (yay).
Jon and the crew were busy demoing Fallout as I went by so I couldn't have a proper chat with them but I had a chance to snap a few pictures of the demo and, well, what can I say? It looks like it's going to be a good game indeed!
I managed to get away for a quick chat with Mantic on day one and had a look at their event exclusive miniature. Our Stock Bandit Will managed to pick it up for his Walking Dead cohort and I'm sure he will be bringing us an update in blog form very soon.
Those who read our blog may have seen Will's Walking Dead blog: First Bite of ALL OUT WAR when he talked about the new All Out War game previously.
The mighty Games Workshop could be found in Hall 3, bringing with them the long-awaited Necromunda... To say I have been looking forward to this would be an understatement.
Ever since being introduced to Necromunda a few years back (yes, I came to the game very late) I have been looking forward to it being resurrected by GW.
I wasn't able to get a demo but, after listening in and snapping some photos, I can clearly see this being well worth the wait. Yes, it has a board but let's see how it plays once released to the masses.
GW was also demoing Shadespire (their latest release).
Did you go to Spiel?
What did you enjoy seeing?
